Police arrest 27 for DUI

During the week of Oct. 19-25, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for DUI. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Four were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 12; South Hilo, seven; Puna, five; and South Kohala, three.

So far this year, there have been 808 DUI arrests compared to 905 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.7%.

There have been 633 major accidents so far this year compared to 809 during the same period last year, a decrease of 21.8%.

To date, there have been 13 official traffic fatalities, compared to 16 fatalities for the same time last year a decrease of 18.8%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
