Melvin “Mike” Mitsuo Tomita, 87 of Paauilo, formerly of Kahului, Maui, died Sept. 4 at Hilo Medical Center. A resident of Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home, he was a retired fire engineer for Honolulu Fire Department, U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran of the 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry Regiment and recipient of the Bronze Star. Services at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl at later date. Survived by son, Mikey Tomita of Kahului; daughters, Gail (Derrick) Nakahara of Centralia, Wash., Lauren Tomita of Washington and Roxsanne (Randy) Ruff-Tomita of Paauilo; hanai daughter, Trudy Morita of Griffin, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Nelson Masashi Tsuji, 79, of Hilo died Sept. 16 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Pepeekeo, he was a retired fire chief for Hawaii County Fire Department, former security officer with TSA at Hilo International Airport and U.S. Army veteran. Services at a later date.
