Police charged a 34-year-old Volcano man with felony firearms and theft charges as well as a probation revocation warrant.

Leroy D.K. Castro III was arrested late Tuesday afternoon at an Omeka Road home by members of the Special Enforcement Unit. Castro, who was wanted on the $50,000 drug court probation warrant and for questioning as a possible witness relative to an unrelated investigation, ran, but was apprehended after a short foot chase, police said.

Police say Castro was carrying a fanny pack, which had a stolen loaded pistol.

He was charged Wednesday night with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, unregistered firearm, not filing a permit to acquire a firearm and two counts of first-degree theft, plus revocation of probation.

On Wednesday, Hilo Circuit Judge Henry Nakamoto maintained Castro’s $50,000 drug court probation revocation bail and ordered him to return to court Oct. 1 for a drug court violation hearing. And on Thursday, Hilo District Judge Kanani Laubach confirmed Castro’s $103,000 bail on the firearms and theft charges, and ordered him to return to court Monday for a preliminary hearing.

Castro remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
