Masayuki Ohashi of Troop 82 and a 2020 graduate of Waiakea High School, was awarded the Eagle Scout rank in March.
Ohashi began his Scouting journey in Hilo Higashi Hongwanji’s Pack & Troop 78 in fifth grade, then moved to Troop 82 at Hilo Meishoin. He is proud of the lessons he learned along the Eagle Scout trail.
Less than 4% of all Scouts in the United States have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout since the inception of the Scouting program in 1912.
Ohashi’s Eagle Scout project consisted of securing funding for and building a rabbit habitat for the Hawaii Island Humane Society, providing a better living environment until they are adopted. The project was completed with the assistance of fellow Scouts and parents.
Charles Lockhart, Ohashi’s Scoutmaster at Troop 82, also served as his guide and mentor on the project.
Ohashi graduated as a valedictorian of his class and was a member of Waiakea High’s tennis team, which won the BIIF team championship this year. He was also in the school’s LEO Club and robotics team, winning second place in the microbot competition and placing in the final eight in FIRST robotics competition.
He is attending University of California, Berkeley this fall, majoring in mechanical engineering.
