William “Bill” O’Neill Freyser, 85, of Hilo died Sept. 1 at home. Born in Chicago, he was a retired U.S. Army Special Forces chief warrant officer III, veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars and recipient of Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star, shipmaster and shipmaster license instructor, and law instructor at University of Hawaii-Hilo. Survived by wife, Shigeko Freyser of Hilo; daughter, Kiyomi (Akira) Takashima of Japan; son, Joji (Yasumi) Sueyoshi of Japan; sister, Ann Louise Baker of Blue Island, Ill.; caregiver, Julia Hoke of Hilo; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Tanikeni “Isi” Holani, 24, of Hilo died August 22 at home. Born in Hilo, he was a 2018 graduate of the University of Kansas, where he played defensive tackle for the Jayhawks, former Hilo Vikings standout and played for a semi-pro football team in Sioux Falls, Iowa.
