A 59-year-old Keaau woman was arrested for violating Mayor Harry Kim’s emergency rules after twice refusing to wear a face covering, police said.

According to police, on Thursday an officer cited Sandra Smart for refusing to put on a mask when advised to outside Keaau Post Office.

Then on Friday, an officer again saw Smart at the post office, provided her a sanitized bagged mask, asked her to wear it and she again refused, police said. At that point, she was arrested for violating the emergency rules.

Smart was taken to the Hilo police station and her bail was set at $2,000.

Her initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
