James “Jim” Masato Mimaki, 87, of Hilo died Aug. 24 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired English instructor at Hawaii Community College, formerly employed at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and state Department of Education, a docent at the Pacific Tsunami Museum, volunteer bonsai instructor at the Kamana Senior Center, served as board director and chairman of Hawaii Island Credit Union League, Big Island Credit Union League and Big Island Bonsai Association, received the Japanese Community Association of Hawaii Cultural Treasure Recognition for Bonsai in 2013 and a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
