Police charge Wallace for shotgun slaying in Puna

Police have charged a 26-year-old Puna man in connection with a Tuesday afternoon shotgun slaying on North Kulani Road in Mountain View just off Highway 11.

Dwayne “CJ” Cory Wallace Jr. is charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony, carrying a loaded firearm on a public highway, three counts of felon in possession of a firearm and methamphetamine possession.

Following up on tips, officers found Wallace, who’s suspected in the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Peter Cyrus Grammer, Friday afternoon at an Aulii Street property in Orchidland Estates subdivision. Wallace got out of his car and rain into the woods, but later emerged from the forest and surrendered to police.

At the time of arrest, Wallace was in possession of a loaded shotgun. No one was injured.

Wallace is being held at the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $1.16 million bail, pending his initial court appearance Monday.

The property owner was also arrested on suspicion of hindering prosecution. He was later released pending further investigation.

Harboring and assisting a fugitive is a felony offense.
