‘Second Saturday’ returns to Volcano
“Second Saturday” returns from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday in Volcano village.
This once-a-month event, designed to showcase the many things to do in Volcano, is sponsored by Experience Volcano Hawaii.
The Volcano Art Center Barbecue Cookout is slated from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Niaulani Campus. VAC will be firing up the grill to offer free hot dogs and hamburgers, while supplies last.
Simply drive up and remain in your car to receive your free barbecue items. Chicken and baby back ribs plates will be available for $15.
The art center’s Niaulani Gallery is currently featuring the quilt exhibit “Quilts in the Forest, Winds of Change.”
Volcano Garden Arts will feature “Shibori” tie dye art with Solahr and Teresa throughout the day.
Cafe Ono will serve special plates lunches. Its new Inspirational Garden is now open, with additional hiking trails.
And Kilauea Lodge will offer its Italian menu. Reservations are recommended.

Virtual talk-story slated with author and journalist Wolman
Award-winning author and journalist David Wolman will be the featured guest for the Hawaii State Public Library System’s virtual talk-story series at 10 a.m. Aug. 22.
This program, which is appropriate for ages 12 and older, is free and open to the public. Join online at facebook.com/hsplshigov; a Facebook account is not required to attend.
Wolman, who recently co-authored “Aloha Rodeo: Three Hawaiian Cowboys, the World’s Greatest Rodeo and a Hidden History of the American West,” will share insights and answer questions about the extraordinary lost story of the Hawaiian cowboys who became rodeo champions, challenging the mythology of the American West.
Wolman has been featured in media such as NPR, RadioLab, BBC, Frontline, CBS Sunday Morning and The Washington Post. He is the author of three previous works of nonfiction and currently is a contributing editor at Outside. Wolman’s writing also has appeared in Wired, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New Yorker, Nature and many other publications.
Kailua-Kona hazardous waste collection event postponed
The household hazardous waste collection event scheduled for Saturday at Kealakehe High School is postponed in order to safeguard residents from the possibility of exposure to COVID-19.
No new date has been set.

Kupuna Hula Festival canceled
The Hawaii County Elderly Activities Division’s 38th annual Kupuna Hula Festival scheduled for Sept. 9-10 at the Outrigger Kona Resort &Spa at Keauhou Bay is canceled.
The Elderly Activities Division’s highest priority is the safety and well-being of the kupuna and community.
It is unfortunate to have to cancel this year’s event, but organizers and the county look forward to the 2021 festival.
