The center of Hurricane Douglas was located about 55 miles east to northeast of Kahului, Maui, and 140 miles east of Honolulu as of 11 a.m. today.
A hurricane warning remains in effect for Maui County, Oahu and Kauai.
Civil Defense sirens reportedly could be heard earlier this morning on eastern Oahu.
A tropical storm warning remains in effect for Hawaii County.
Douglas, a Category 1 hurricane, is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph, and this motion is expected to continue over the next couple of days, according to the National Weather Service.
On the forecast track, Douglas will pass near, or over, the islands from Maui to Kauai today and tonight.
Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph with higher gusts. Gradual weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Douglas is expected to remain a hurricane as it moves through the islands, the NWS said.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles.
