Waimea District Park was renamed the Spencer Kalani Schutte District Park.
The Hawaii County Council approved the renaming Wednesday, which went into effect immediately.
The park is named after Spencer Kalani Schutte, who served on the council for 14 years and was instrumental in securing funding to build the park, according to the bill proposing the renaming.
Kohala Councilman Tim Richards said a dedication ceremony for the park will take place whenever it is considered safe to do so, given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
