Eufemia S. Cruz, 92, of Pahala died June 13 in Pahala. Born in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, she retired operating her Certified Nurse Aide Care Home and baked Filipino pastries commercially with her late husband, Felix Cruz, and was the last-living Filipino Sakada in Pahala, sailed on the SS Marine Falcon from Port Salomague, Philippines, to Hawaii in 1946 and was awarded and recognized by the Hawaii State Legislature and the Hawaii County Council on Dec. 20, 2015. Yoshino Hanashiro, 95, of Honomu died June 19 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Papaikou, she was retired from Hilo Hattie’s and a member of Honomu Hongwanji Mission, Honomu Hongwanji Fujinkai and Hui Okinawa. Private services held. Survived by sons, Allan (Duen) Hanashiro of Las Vegas and Clyde “Kazu” Hanashiro of Honomu; daughter, Maxine Hanashiro of Hilo; sisters-in-law, Mabel Nagamine of Honolulu, Hiroko Nagamine of Hilo and Yasuko Hanashiro of Okinawa, Japan; brothers-in-law, Michiwo (Jane) Hanashiro and George Hanashiro of Hilo; three grandchildren; great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Fusae Suwa, 91, of Kurtistown died June 21 at a private care home. Born in Kurtistown, she was a retired sales clerk at KTA Super Stores and the former Sako Store, member of Kurtistown Jodo Mission and Fujinkai and Niigata Kenjin Kai. Private services held.
