Another Hawaii resident has died from COVID-19.

Gov. David Ige expressed his condolences Friday to the family and friends of an elderly Honolulu man who became the 18th death in Hawaii due to the coronavirus.

The last reported death was May 3.

“This is the worst way to emphasize the need for all of us to continue safe practices such as physical distancing, wearing of masks, and hand washing,” Ige said. “We must protect our kupuna and others who are at high risk by practicing personal responsibility, especially around others outside our own immediate family or household.”

Also on Friday, the state Department of Health reported 17 new COVID-19 cases, all but three on Oahu, bringing the statewide case total to 866.

One case from the statewide total was removed because of updated information. Two of the new cases Friday were diagnosed out of state.

The City and County of Honolulu has had 608 reported cases.

Hawaii County’s total is at 86 cases, with 84 released from isolation as recovered. Two Big Island cases have required hospitalization.

Maui County has 122 reported cases, while Kauai County, which had one new case Friday, is now at 34.

Hawaii’s statewide case total includes 16 residents diagnosed outside the state.

The number of statewide cases requiring hospitalization is 109.

There have been 705 cases statewide that have been released from isolation as recovered, according to the DOH.
