Police arrest 11 for DUI

During the week of June 1-7, Hawaii Island police arrested 11 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, five; Puna, South Hilo and South Kohala, two each.

So far this year, there have been 367 DUI arrests compared to 506 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27.5%.

There have been 344 major accidents so far this year compared to 400 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14%.

To date, there have been nine official traffic fatalities compared to 10 during the same time period last year, a decrease of 10%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
