The Daniel K. Inouye Highway has reopened after a traffic crash this morning in Hilo that left one person dead.

According to police, officers responded at about 10:13 a.m. to the crash near the intersection of the DKI and Kaumana Drive.

Preliminary investigation indicates a 2001 Kenworth semi-trailer truck driven by a 58-year-old man from Hilo was traveling Kona bound on DKI near Kaumana Drive, when a 2007 Honda sport-utility vehicle initiated a left turn from the Hilo bound lanes of DKI onto Kaumana Drive and was broadsided by the larger truck, police said.

The driver of the SUV was dead at the scene, police said. The individual has not been identified.

The tractor-trailer driver was injured and taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment.

The Hilo Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a negligent homicide investigation in this case.
