This is not a hoax

I don’t know what is more stressful, dealing with the virus or knowing I am living among people who are so ignorant.

This is in response to the letter written by Vicki Vierra in your May 13 edition (Your Views, Tribune-Herald).

She referred to “social distancing” as not supported by any “scientific studies” that “she found.”

Well, maybe she needs to look harder. There are lots of scientific studies on the spread pattern of breathing, coughing and sneezing.

Then she is comparing “social distancing” to a communist take over of the United States!

Where is she coming from? I understand every one can have their own opinion, but let’s not show off our lack of intelligence by airing it in the Commentary section.

First of all, it is purely common sense not wanting to be around sick people who have infectious diseases. When someone has the flu, we ask them to stay home and not spread the illness around. We stay away as much as possible. That’s before COVID-19. That’s common sense. I don’t need any scientific studies to tell me to stay away from sick people.

How can anyone even remotely construe that as a communist takeover?

I am thankful the leadership in this state is so proactive and shut down the islands from tourists and is promoting social distancing. Yes, Vicki, social distancing is NOT a new word. It is a simplified term to tell you to stay the hell away from me because I simply do not trust you.

The problem is there are people out there not knowing they are carrying the virus without symptoms. I am not going to take that chance. I am not concerned for my safety personally, but I don’t want my friends and families to get sick.

People who refuse to practice social distancing are simply selfish. They can only think about themselves.

Vicki also stated she is amazed at the speed the term is being used. Maybe she needs to visit a hospital where they are treating patients with COVID-19 to see how fast the disease is spreading. That’s not a word or a term. That’s real life people suffering. Patients suffering under ventilators. Doctors and nurses suffering with mask burns on their faces, mental anguish because they cannot save all their patients.

Maybe then she will be genuinely amazed. Or maybe she thinks COVID-19 is a hoax also. Nothing about this pandemic is a guise. Go ask the families of the ones who died.

Open your eyes, and open your mind.

Hilo

Who can stop this?

Aloha to all of our island communities.

My burning question is: Why are the tourists allowed to board planes to Hawaii? Who can stop this? Is it up to our governor? Each mayor? The president?

This is perpetuating the problem, not to mention costing us far too much money to track these tourists down and babysit them!

We even have financed their rides back to where they live. This is nothing short of shameful!

Enough is enough. Time to stand up and put an end to this foolishness.
