The Hawaii Police Department arrested nine people for not sheltering in place during the past week.
In the first week since Gov. David Ige issued an emergency proclamation ordering residents to remain at home to avoid spreading the novel coronavirus, the police also cited another six people for violating that order.
Arrests by district were: Kona, 3; South Hilo, 2; Puna, 2; and one each in Ka‘u and South Kohala. Four of the citations also were made in Kona, with the other two in South Hilo.
Three other criminal cases were initiated against violators, two in Ka‘u and one in Puna.
Until the end of April 30, all those in the state are ordered to stay at their residence except as necessary to work at essential businesses or for other essential activities, and to comply with social distancing requirements, including maintaining at least 6 feet of distance between other people.
Violators shall be guilty of a misdemeanor upon conviction and can be fined up to $5,000, imprisoned up to one year or both.
