The Palace marquee lights come on in the evening, seeming to promise the entertainment Hilo is accustomed to viewing. However, theaters, filmmakers and distributors around the globe face the unprecedented challenge to adapt to these turbulent times.

The Palace doors remain closed for the time being, but its staff has been hard at work figuring out a way to bring the entertainment directly to audiences’ home.

In partnership with the team at Kino Lorber, the Palace is proud to announce it will be taking its digital cinema streaming to the next level with Kino Marquee.

Starting Friday, April 3rd, audiences can stream the acclaimed Brazilian film “Bacurau” from the comfort of home and support the Palace Theater. A virtual screening room portal will be hosted at www.hilopalace.com, and 50% of all sales made directly benefit the Palace, ensuring the continuation of its efforts to bring the best in modern cinema to the island community.

“‘Bacurau’ is genre-busting entertainment that is at once a portrait of a community, a horror thriller and a timely piece of political filmmaking,” said John Powers of NPR. “’Bacurau’ is one of those movies like ‘Parasite’ … where you’re never quite sure which way it’s heading.”

“This is an exciting development for the Palace Theater” said Phillips Payson, the theater’s executive director. “’Bacurau’ is the first of more great films to come from the Kino Marquee digital streaming platform. The Palace is grateful to Kino Lorber for providing us and other theaters with the opportunity to share noteworthy films with you, our patrons. Your purchase ensures a sustainable path forward for the Palace while our theater remains temporarily closed. Enjoy the film from home and we look forward to the day when it is safe to see you back at the Palace!”

“Bacurau,” winner of the Grand Jury Award from the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, is directed by Juliano Dornelles and Kleber Mendonca Filho and stars Barbara Colen, Thomas Aquino and Silvero Pereira. The movie is in English and Portuguese with English subtitles.

While this film is not yet rated, it does depict scenes of violence. Viewer discretion is advised.

“Continue to stay safe and watch this wild film from home,” Payson said. “It’s a great way to keep yourself sane and help the Palace at the same time.”

The film will only be available for two weeks starting Friday, so don’t miss out!
