All county beaches are closing according to a statement late this afternoon from the office of Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim.

The closure, effective Saturday, closes all county beach and shoreline parks, public shoreline access easements, public open space shoreline and coastal lands, undeveloped county shoreline and coastal lands, to public access and use until further notice.

All camping, pavilion and use permits associated with these affected lands are also cancelled or suspended until further notice, the statement said.

The statement did not mention the COVID-19 pandemic — Kim has been the subject of community backlash for keeping the beach parks open.
