Amid the situation regarding COVID-19, the Hawaii Island Humane Society’s top priority is protecting its staff and the public while providing the utmost care for its animals.

According to the World Health Organization, there is no evidence that companion animals have been infected or could spread the coronavirus.

As of March 18, HIHS shelters will remain open but services will be limited and access to the public will be restricted. The following essential services at the shelters, with limited interaction with the public, will continue: open admissions of found, stray or trapped animals; dog licensing; reporting a lost pet; and owner-requested euthanasia. For any of these services, call the shelter location nearest to you or go directly to the shelter. Be prepared to wait.

To make an Animal Control report, call the shelter location nearest to you.

Adoptions, fostering and surrendering pets are by appointment only. To make an appointment at the Keaau shelter, email east.programs@hihs.org or call 966-5458. To make an appointment at the Kona or Waimea shelters, email west.programs@hihs.org or call 329-1175.

With consideration to public health, all of the following services and programs will be suspended until further notice:

• Microchipping.

• Community spay and neuter.

• Humane education classes and group visits.

• Events.

• New volunteer introductions.

• Field trips for shelter dogs.

The Hawaii Island Humane Society thanks the public for its understanding.
