Police arrest 25 for DUI

During the week of March 9-15, Hawaii Island Police arrested 25 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna, nine; Kona and South Hilo, seven each; and North Kohala and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 246 DUI arrests compared to 256 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.9 percent.

There have been 200 major accidents so far this year compared to 206 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.9 percent.

To date, there have been six official traffic fatalities, compared to three at the same time last year, an increase of 100 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
