Out of concern for the public health because of the ongoing coronavirus crisis, Kilauea Drama & Entertainment Network (KDEN) is suspending its living history program “A Walk Into the Past with Thomas Jaggar” at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The suspension will last through March.
The program usually takes place at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Tuesdays at the park. The program is free, but reservations need to be made as there is a limited number of participants per performance.
“A Walk Into the Past” features local actor Dick Hershberger as Dr. Thomas Jaggar, founder of Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The nationally acclaimed program takes place in the Whitney Vault just below the Volcano House and takes participants back to 1912, just before the Bosch-Omori seismograph was installed in Whitney Vault.
Hershberger, portraying Jaggar, explains why his mission is to save lives through the study of volcanoes around the world.
KDEN is also looking forward to this summer’s musical, Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance.” Auditions are scheduled for May 10-11 at Kilauea Military Camp’s Kilauea Theater. Performances are scheduled for July 10-26.
KDEN will be monitoring the coronavirus situation and make changes as necessary.
