Police arrest 23 for DUI

During the week of March 2-8, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for DUI. Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; Puna, seven; South Hilo, five; North Kohala and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 221 DUI arrests compared to 223 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.9 percent.

There have been 191 major accidents so far this year compared to 186 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.7 percent.

To date, there have been six official traffic fatalities, compared to two fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 200 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
