During the week of Feb. 24-March 1, 2020, Hawaii Island police arrested 29 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None were younger than 21.

The arrests by district were: Kona, 12; Puna, seven; South Hilo, five; North Kohala and South Kohala, two each; and Hamakua, one.

So far this year, there have been 198 DUI arrests compared to 195 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.5 percent.

There have been 168 major accidents so far this year compared to 163 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.1 percent.

To date, there have been six traffic fatalities, compared to two fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 200 percent for fatalities.
