Basketball: Another loss leaves Vuls in playoff bind

The UH-Hilo men’s basketball team lost its penultimate game of the regular season Thursday night, 82-68 at Chaminade.

The Vuls remain tied for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Pacific West Conference playoffs, and they will need to beat Hawaii Pacific on Saturday and hope Academy of Art loses to Notre Dame de Namur to reach the postseason.

The UH-Hilo women’s basketball team beat Chaminade 60-52 on Thursday at McCabe Gym to secure a season sweep of the Silverswords and cement seventh place in the conference.

The Vulcans (10-15, 9-12 PacWest) equaled the program’s best finish since 2016, also seventh.

The Vulcans hit 8 of 17 from 3-point range and Allie Navarette had a double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Mandi Kawaha scored 16 points and Mikayla Tablit added 11 points.

Chaminade used a 14-2 run in the second quarter to take a 24-20 lead. Navarette hit a 3-pointer for a 29-29 tie, but the Silverswords took a 31-29 halftime lead.

Navarette scored 15 points in the first half, and Tablit went 3 of 3 from long distance.

The Vulcans opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run to grab a 39-31 lead. The Silverswords eventually tied it at 39-39, and UHH took a 44-41 lead heading into the fourth period

Chaminade drained consecutive 3-pointers for a 47-43 lead. Navarette tied it 49-49, and the Vuls hit their free throws to close out the game.

Destiny Castro scored 15 points to lead Chaminade (4-24, 4-18), which is 11th or second-to-last in the standings.
