Police arrest 22 for DUI

During the week of Feb. 17-23, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; South Hilo, six; Puna, four; North Kohala and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 169 DUI arrests compared to 175 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.4 percent. There have been 155 major accidents so far this year compared to 142 during the same period last year, an increase of 9.2 percent.

To date, there have been five official traffic fatalities compared to two fatalities at the same time last year. This represents an increase of 150 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
