There have been many instances where our nation’s flags, uniforms, veteran portraits, and military memorabilia lay strewn at the transfer station in Hilo — a disrespectful sight of veterans’ memories dumped. It appears that upon a veteran’s passing, family members are unsure as to what to do with “veterans stuffs” — eventually ending up at the landfill.

American Legion Post 3 Hilo Commander Jeno Enocencio is asking family members to gather all unwanted U.S. burial flags, uniforms, portraits and other military memorabilia and awards and call (808) 542-8666. Commander Enocencio will arrange to have these items picked up. Items having historical value will be used during veteran events or static displays, honoring the veteran and the sacrifices made for this great country and the freedom we enjoy.

The legion is also scheduled to have a retirement flag burning ceremony with a youth group on June 14.
