LIFE DRAWING WITH THE HILO ARTISTS HUI

Details: Open to all. Children younger than 18 years old must provide permission from a parent to attend. Cost is $15 per person. Arrive a few minutes early. Sessions feature drawing from a nude or partially draped model in a traditional format, starting with one minute gesture drawings and working up to 20 minute poses. Chairs are provided; however, participants must furnish their own drawing materials. Bring a drawing board or easel; 11-by-14-inch or larger pad of paper is recommended. All mediums are fine to use. If you wish to paint using traditional oils you must use a low odor, artist-grade solvent.

Details: Many cultures around the world have ancient languages written in pictures or symbols. Ogham is an ancient language also known as the ‘Celtic Tree Alphabet’ found in Ireland. Children celebrate the Emerald Isles (Ireland) by making their own Ogham. This simple craft uses craft sticks, pens, lined paper and a little imagination. Participants write their ABC’s on paper draw simple pictures or symbols for each letter. These are used to write short messages that can be decoded and shared.

This year’s shows will feature 15 different performances spanning the globe. Crowd favorites such as Tupulaga O Samoa Mo a Taeao representing Samoa and Taishoji Taiko representing Japan will be back. Other performances will showcase the unique cultures of the Philippines, India, Micronesia, Ireland, West Africa, Tonga, Palau, and the Marshall Islands. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for senior citizens, and $5 for students and children 17 years and under. ANCIENT PAHU DRUMMING, CHANT, AND STORY WITH KUMU KALA

Details: With the introduction of pahu drums to Hawaii in the 1100’s, the integrity of spiritual expression was elevated. While the people of ancient Hawai’i continued using ipuheke (gourd drums) to accompany hula, eventually the art of pahu leo was mastered. Until 1819, pahu was in full expression. Details: This drop-in style class will allow island residents and visitors the opportunity to try their hand at creating with clay on the potter’s wheel, without having to commit to an eight- or 10-week series. Emphasis will be placed on getting a feel for working on the potter’s wheel and experiencing the thrill of hand-forming a pot in motion. Students with all levels of clay experience welcome. Cost is $35 or $30 for VAC members.
