Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin invites you to attend its Spring Seminar on March 13-14. The featured speaker will be Reverend Patricia Kanaya Usuki of the San Fernando Valley Hongwanji Buddhist Temple.

The event begins with an Interfaith Forum Friday evening in the main temple hall at 7 p.m.

The forum is free and open to the public.

Saturday’s seminar topic will be “Don’t Worry – Be Happy”, an active exploration of happiness and well-being in the context of self and society, guided by Buddha-Dharma and Nembutsu teachings.

The Saturday session is from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Administration Conference Room and costs $10 to cover lunch and materials.

Registration must be made at the temple office located at 398 Kilauea Avenue by March 8.

Reverend Usuki was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She graduated from the University of Toronto (B.A. in Modern Languages and Literature), University of Ottawa, (B.Ed.), Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley, California (M.A. Graduate Theological Union) and Chuo Bukkyo Gakuin Seminary in Kyoto.

She received her Tokudo in 2001 and Kyoshi in 2002.

Reverend Usuki has lived and worked in France, New York, Ecuador and Japan, served for several years with the Government of Canada, was a public school teacher in Toronto and English teacher in Japan.

She also served at the International Department, Honpa Hongwanji, Kyoto, as a European language specialist (French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian) and English editor.

Usuki is the author of “Currents of Change: American Buddhist Women Speak Out on Jodo Shinshu.”

Currently she is assigned to San Fernando Valley Hongwanji Buddhist Temple.

She is married to Reverend Fumiaki Usuki of West Los Angles Buddhist Temple.
