Police are investigating possible DUI charges against UFC Hall of Fame former two-division champion BJ Penn of Hilo.

According to a Hawaii Police Department statement released today, Penn was behind the wheel of a black Toyota Tacoma pickup truck that lost control and flipped onto an embankment and came to rest against two poles on Highway 11 fronting Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo at about 7:39 p.m. Friday night.

According to the statement, the 40-year-old Penn — whose legal name is Jay Dee Penn — was injured and taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment.

Police said speeding is suspected, and investigations have been opened including DUI, consuming or possessing liquor while operating a motor vehicle and inattention to driving.

According to police, when the investigations are completed, the case will be routed to prosecutors for screening and potential charges.
