Police are investigating possible DUI charges against UFC Hall of Fame former two-division champion BJ Penn of Hilo.

According to a Hawaii Police Department statement released today, Penn was behind the wheel of a black Toyota Tacoma pickup truck that lost control, flipped onto an embankment and came to rest against two poles on Highway 11 fronting Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo at about 7:39 p.m. Friday night.

According to the statement, the 41-year-old Penn — whose legal name is Jay Dee Penn — was injured and taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment.

Police said speeding is suspected, and investigations have been opened including DUI, consuming or possessing liquor while operating a motor vehicle and inattention to driving.

According to police, when the investigations are completed, the case will be routed to prosecutors for screening and potential charges.
