Police arrest 22 for DUI

During the week of Feb. 2-9, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None of the drivers were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 12; Puna, six; South Hilo, two; North Kohala and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 125 DUI arrests compared to 115 during the same period last year, an increase of 8.7 percent.

There have been 107 major accidents so far this year compared to 106 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.9 percent.

As of Monday, there were three traffic fatalities, compared to two at the same time last year, an increase of 50 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
