George A. Caravalho, 81, of Santa Cruz, Calif., formerly of North Kohala, died Jan. 5. Born in North Kohala, he was a retired city manager, holding the top job in the California cities of San Clemente, Bakersfield, Santa Clarita and Riverside, receiving the prestigious Mark E. Keane Award for Excellence from the International City/County Management Association in 1996, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from San Jose State University. He was buried at Santa Cruz Memorial Park on Jan. 13. Memorial donations to Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island, 100 Kamakahonu St., Hilo, HI 96720. Survived by wife, Mary Caravalho of Santa Cruz; sons, Gus (Sarah) Caravalho of Washington, D.C., and Danny (Jamie) Caravalho of Oakland, Calif.

Eunice “Nickie” Meliaka Kunz, 92, of Hilo died Jan. 18 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Wailuku, Maui, she was a retired assistant credit manager for Realty Investment Co. and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Hale O Na Alii O Hawaii. Visitation 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Feb 6, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Wake service at 6 p.m. Visitation again 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Norma Broemser Myers, 98, of Kailua-Kona, died Jan. 26 at Regency at Hualalai. Born in Fresno, Calif., she was a former librarian and substitute physical education teacher. Private service. Chieko Naguwa, 93, of Hilo died Jan. 9 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Hilo, she was a retired nurses aide for the former Hilo Hospital. Private services held.
