George A. Caravalho, 81, of Santa Cruz, Calif., formerly of North Kohala, died Jan. 5. Born in North Kohala, he was a retired city manager, holding the top job in the California cities of San Clemente, Bakersfield, Santa Clarita and Riverside, receiving the prestigious Mark E. Keane Award for Excellence from the International City/County Management Association in 1996, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from San Jose State University. He was buried at Santa Cruz Memorial Park on Jan. 13. Memorial donations to Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island, 100 Kamakahonu St., Hilo, HI 96720. Eunice “Nickie” Meliaka Kunz, 92, of Hilo died Jan. 18 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center.
