Basketball: Stansberry scores 15, Hawaii beats Cal Poly 65-61

HONOLULU — Eddie Stansberry scored 15 points, Zigmars Raimo had a double-double and Hawaii held on to beat Cal Poly 65-61 on Thursday night.

Raimo finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Hawaii (11-5, 2-1 Big West Conference) led 45-29 with 15 minutes to play but the Mustangs used a pair of 10-2 runs and then scored six consecutive points to pull within a point with three minutes remaining. Stansberry answered with a 3-pointer and Cal Poly (4-13, 1-2) got no closer.

Colby Rogers led the Mustangs with 18 points and Kyle Colvin scored 11.Cal Poly has lost 13 consecutive road games dating to last season.

Women

Hawaii 80, UC Riverside 57: Julissa Tago scored 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting as the Wahine picked up their first Big West Conference win.

Freshman point guard Nae Nae Calhoun flirted with her first-career double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, while totaling six assists as UH (7-9, 1-2) snapped a four-game losing streak.

“Tonight was fun,” Calhoun said in a school release. “I loved playing at such a fast pace. I have shooters to my left and my right; I just have to find them. Tonight was a blast.”

The Highlanders (5-11, 1-1), who have lost three in a row to Hawaii, shot just 39%, including 2 of 16 from 3-point range.
