Preparing to head off to college is an exciting time for many teenagers, but it can also be stressful when the costs of tuition, books, room and board, etc., start to add up. Which is why HFS Federal Credit Union has been awarding scholarships to help local students achieve their dreams by decreasing the financial burden that comes with pursuing higher education.

The HFS FCU Scholarship Program began 8 years ago, and since then, has awarded over $127,000 in scholarships that have helped over 50 student members with their first year of college expenses. The credit union is proud to support these young minds that will be the future leaders of the Big Island community and members of the workforce.

The application period for the HFS Scholarship Program is now open for current Big Island high school seniors in the 2020 graduating class. The credit union will be awarding a total of $17,500 to selected students, with seven scholarships each for $2,500.

Student members of HFS pursuing higher education full-time at an accredited 2 or 4 year vocational/technical school, college, or university in the 2020-21 school year are eligible to apply. Recipients will be selected based on a variety of criteria, including academic performance, achievements and community service.

For a list of requirements, or to apply, students may download the application at www.hfsfcu.org/news/2020scholarship, pick one up at any HFS FCU branch location island-wide or inquire with their high school counselors. Completed applications with supporting documents must be turned in to the Credit Union or postmarked no later than Feb. 29.
