Women’s basketball: UHH douses Dominican

UH-Hilo women’s basketball team had balanced scoring with four players in double figures and defeated Dominican 80-65 on Thursday at Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Allie Navarette scored 19 points on 6 of 11 shooting, Kim Schmelz added 16 points, Sara Shimizu had 15 points, and Mandi Kawaha had 11 points for the Vulcans (4-8, 3-5 PacWest), who shot 43 percent from the field, including 6 of 21 from 3-point range.

Jerusha Paine scored 29 points, and Marisa Mondave added 18 points for the Penguins (5-8, 2-5), who made 43 percent from the floor, including 2 of 13 from long distance.

Paine, the second-leading scorer in NCAA Division II, made 13 of 16 free throws The 6-foot forward also grabbed five rebounds.

UHH led 41-31 at halftime and closed the second quarter with a 12-4 run. Shimizu had seven points during that spree, including a basket with two seconds left.

The Vulcans opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 17-point lead. Navarette made a 3-pointer to help UHH take a 66-48 lead into the final 10 minutes.

The Penguins managed a 10-run in the fourth quarter but got no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

The Vulcans wrap up a five-game homestand against Notre Dame de Namur at 5 p.m. Monday at the Civic.
