Police say stepped-up enforcement by police assigned to the Thirty Meter Telescope encampment and blockade on Maunakea Access Road issued 436 traffic citations on Daniel K. Inouye Highway and arrested two suspects for two offenses in the week between Nov. 28-Dec. 4.
The traffic citations were for: speeding, 226; excessive speeding, four; seatbelt violations, 12; child restraint violations, one; use of cellphone or electronic device while driving, seven; excessive tint on windshields or windows, 17; driving without a license, six; driving without insurance, 20; unsafe vehicle, 13; other moving violations, two; no license plate, 16; and regulatory citations, 112.
No parking tickets were issued, police said.
The two arrests were for disorderly conduct and contempt of court or failure to appear.
Police said the disorderly conduct offense arrest involved a 37-year-old man creating a safety hazard to passing motorists by standing in the roadway on Daniel K. Inouye Highway at the intersection of Maunakea Access Road behaving aggressively and refusing to get off the road.
Police say the 16-week long Daniel K. Inouye Highway enhanced traffic enforcement by the Hawaii Police Department, which began on Aug. 15, stands at 7,677 citations issued and 71 persons arrested for 132 offenses.
The effort will continue for the duration of the ongoing protest situation for the safety of motorists and pedestrians, police said.
