The Wailoa Center is putting out a call to plein aire artists who would like to submit pieces for the upcoming statewide juried exhibit “Plein Aire Perspectives,” which will be on display from Feb. 7-27. The exhibit is sponsored by the Hawaii Island Art Alliance.
Jurors for this first ever plein aire juried exhibit are accomplished artists Bonnie Sol Hahn and Amy Markham, who both are residents of Hawaii Island and involved with plein aire groups throughout the state.
Their joint statement reads: “It is an honor to be invited to curate ‘Plein Air Perspectives: Hawaii Statewide Juried Exhibit’ … . The incredibly varied landscape of Hawaii is inspiring in many ways. Participating artists are asked to create art on location in Hawaii. Painting on location not only documents the physical and atmospheric elements that inspire the artist, but the finished work is imbued with the mana of that location. We are looking for work that communicates a strong sense of place. We encourage various media, as well as traditional and nontraditional approaches to plein aire painting. No photography, reproductions or digital art please. We look forward to seeing your work.”
The deadline for submissions is 8 p.m. Jan. 17, 2020. All media will be accepted — up to five entries at $15 per entry, which is nonrefundable. Artists will be notified about jury results on Jan. 20, 2020.
Kona art pick up will be Friday, Jan. 31, 2020, at Donkey Mill. Drop off of accepted artwork will be from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020, at Wailoa Center. Off-island work must be received by Jan. 31, 2020, and must include a prepaid return label; ship to Wailoa Center, 200 Piopio St., Hilo, HI 96720.
