A 35-year-old Naalehu man died following a single-car collision Sunday on Kamaoa Road in Naalehu, 0.7 miles east of South Point Road.

Police identified the victim as Paul Ray Roby.

Officers responding to a 9:55 a.m. call determined Roby was driving a white 2000 Mercedes-Benz convertible east, ran off the right shoulder on the makai side of the roadway. The convertible went down an 8-foot embankment and struck several trees before overturning on its top.

Roby was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:27 p.m.

Police think speed and alcohol are factors in the crash.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Witnesses to the fatal crash are asked to call Officer Jason Foxworthy at (808) 326-4646, ext. 229, or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.

Roby’s death is the 22nd official traffic fatality this year compared to 28 at this time last year.
