During the week of Nov. 11-17, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Three were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Kona, 12.

• South Hilo, eight.

• South Kohala, three.

• Puna, one.

So far this year, there have been 963 DUI arrests compared to 961 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.21%.

There have been 852 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,029 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.2%.

To date, there have been 21 official traffic fatalities compared to 27 for the same time last year, a 22% decrease for official fatalities.

There have also been three road deaths police don’t count toward the official total:

• One because the driver was found to have died from a medical condition.

• Another because the driver was found to have died because of natural causes.

• And a third because the fatality occurred in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which isn’t in Hawaii Police Department jurisdiction.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
