Police identified a man who died Saturday from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash on Highway 19 in Laupahoehoe as 49-year-old Vincent L. Pereira Jr. of Mountain View.

Officers responding to a 3:41 p.m. call determined Pereira was riding a 2000 Harley-Davidson motorcycle south when he crossed the double-solid yellow line 1/10 mile north of the 26-mile marker and struck a guard rail.

He was pronounced dead at 6:47 p.m. at Hilo Medical Center.

An autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Pereira’s death is the 20th official traffic fatality this year compared to 27 at this time last year.

The Traffic Enforcement Unit initiated a Coroner’s Inquest investigation and is asking for anyone who might have witnessed the crash to contact Officer Jared Cabatu at 961-2339.
