Authorities say arson is the cause of a Sunday evening fire that caused almost $57,000 damage to a house in Volcano Golf and County Club Subdivision.

According to a Hawaii Fire Department statement, the house is being used as a short-term vacation rental and arriving guests saw smoke coming from the building’s seams.

Firefighters responding to the 7:21 p.m. alarm found the windows whited out with paint and most of the household furniture piled up in the living room and in flames.

The fire was reported under control at 7:55 p.m. and extinguished at 8 p.m.

An estimated $170,775 in property damage was saved by the response.

The home is in the subdivision adjacent to the golf course, where the main commercial building was damaged by fire on Thursday.

Fire inspectors and police are investigating.
