Police issue 312 citations, arrest two in DKI enforcement

Officers assigned to the Thirty Meter Telescope protester blockade and encampment on Maunakea Access Road issued 312 traffic citations and arrested 11 suspects on Daniel K. Inouye Highway between Nov. 7-13, police said Thursday.

The 312 citations were categorized as follows: speeding, 162; excessive speeding, three; seat belt violations, 24; child restraint violations, two; illegal window or windshield tint, six; driving without a license, seven; driving without insurance, eight; unsafe vehicle, seven; other moving violations, six; no license plate, nine; regulatory citations, 77; and parking violation, one.

The 11 arrested offenses were: contempt of court or failure to appear, one; probation revocation, one; resisting an order to stop vehicle, one; reckless driving, one; excessive speeding, one; driving without a license, one; driving without insurance, one; promoting a dangerous drug, one; drug paraphernalia, one.

The combined 13-week total of the enhanced traffic enforcement efforts by Hawaii Police Department on Daniel K. Inouye Highway is 6,585 citations issued and 62 people arrested for 121 offenses.

The increased enforcement, which started Aug. 15, will continue for the duration of the ongoing protest for the safety of motorists and pedestrians, police said.
