The Hawaii Fire Department rescued a woman from the Onomea shoreline this morning who apparently had been stranded there for four days after her kayak sank on Sunday.

Four units, including a county helicopter, responded to the 10:42 a.m. alarm after a 911 caller aboard a boat heard someone calling for help.

A fire rescue specialist was dropped into the water and swam ashore. The rescuer did an initial assessment of the woman, who was said to have some minor abrasions and injuries consistent with exposure to the elements.

The woman was taken to Hilo Medical Center for further treatment.
