Try your hand at creating palm seed stem (inflorescence) random weave baskets during a fun, hands-on workshop with Jelena Clay from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.

Students will learn how to take a palm seed stem and manipulate it into a defined shape. The baskets will have a leather hanger to hang on the wall. Students will create a mold in the class, which will define the pocket shape and use reed to weave the shape.

Dyes also will be available to add a little color if desired.

All supplies will be provided to make a wall basket (extra supplies will be available). If you have a favorite bead or seed pod, bring it to add. Other Embellishments also will be available if students choose to add them.

Cost is $55, or $50 for VAC members, plus a $30 supply fee. Clay will provide the palm seed stems, mold supplies, leather hanger and embellishments.

Pre-registration is required. Register by calling 967-8222 or visiting www.volcanoartcenter.org.
