The conditions were much more conducive to goal-scoring than a week ago, but it never materialized on the scoreboard.
That’s nothing new for UH-Hilo women’s soccer team nor Dominican, who played to scoreless draw Wednesday at the Vulcans’ baseball field.
In stark contrast to the veritable swamp UHH played in last week at home in a 2-0 victory, the teams to took the pitch this time after a calm day weather-wise.
The scoreboard operator was able to remain calm as well.
The Vuls (2-4-3, 1-1-1 Pacific West Conference) played to their third 0-0 match this season, while the Penguins (3-3-5, 0-2-2) did so for the fifth time.
In the men’s match, Dominican dominated 5-1, scoring the last four goals of the match. Henrique Castilho scored for the Vuls (2-6, 1-2).
The five goals for the Penguins (2-7-1, 1-3-0) were a season high and they snapped a four-match losing streak, getting two goals from Luke Raley.
The UHH women have only given up only one goal in their past four matches but they only have one win to show for it.
The Vuls put six of their 18 shots on frame. UHH goalkeeper UHH’s Bailey Cahill made three saves. Dominican took 10 shots.
In the first half, Vuls junior Christina Kanellou’s rocket bounced off the left bar.
In the second half, Nanea Wall sent a shot that was blocked in front of the goal by goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos. Kanellou got the rebound and lofted it over Ramos, but a Dominican defender was able to head the ball away.

In the men’s match, Castilho netted his first goal of the season in the seventh minute by guiding the ball through multiple defenders from the right side, answering Raley’s goal.
But the Penguins had all the answers from there.
In the 16th minute, Colin Gunby converted after two of his teammates were blocked in front of the goal. Raley and Arturo Carrillo Contreras scored in the first 11 minutes of the second half, and Eddie Silverbush also scored for the Penguins, who held a 13-10 shots advantage (8-5 on in shots on goal).
The Vulcans wrap up their homestand Saturday against Fresno Pacific.
