There was good news coming out of the UH-Hilo women’s soccer team’s 1-0 loss on Sunday.
The Vulcans can say good riddance to Ebony Madrid.
Hawaii Pacific’s high-scoring senior forward did it to UHH again, breaking a scoreless deadlock in the 77th minute to lift the Sharks to a 1-0 victory at Oahu’s Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
On Sept. 28 in Hilo, Ebony Madrid shocked the Vuls by scoring three consecutive goals, the final tally coming in double-overtime.
Her latest bit of heroism could be considered more damaging since it denied UHH (1-4-2 overall, 0-1-0 PacWest) a chance to earn a point in its conference opener. Madrid, who is tied for the PacWest lead with eight goals, scored after taking a pass from from Brittany Ihara.
The Vulcans were the more aggressive team in the first half and outshot the Sharks (4-3-1, 2-1-0) 20-14 for the match, but they couldn’t manage to get any of their seven shots on frame past Marissa Froio.
Goalkeeper Bailey Cahill made four saves for UHH, which has four one-goal losses on the season.

This wasn’t a shark attack, but the Vuls still got hurt.
UHH played better but found the same result, losing 2-0 to Hawaii Pacific.
On Sept. 28 in Hilo, the Vuls (1-5-0, 0-1-0) were taken apart in a 6-1 loss.
Gerrit Arzberger has a hand in HPU’s first tally, which went into the books as an own goal 40 minutes into the first half, and he assisted on Paul Enzigmueller’s goal in the 57th minute.
Both goalkeepers, including the Vuls’ Michael Harre, made five saves.
Kalei Tolentino-Perry was busy for the Vulcans, firing nine shots, two on goal.

The men’s and women’s team return home to host Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday.
