Contestants sought for giant fruit and veggie event

Entries for the 2019 Hawaii County Giant Fruit and Vegetable Contest will be accepted between 8 and 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, in the 4-H area at the Hawaii County Fairgrounds in Hilo.

There are two divisions to enter: adults and youth/school. Categories include giant pumpkin, giant field pumpkin, giant watermelon, giant tomato, giant bushel gourd, long gourd, giant sunflower (head) and “other giants,” which includes any other oversized fruit or vegetable. A prize also will be given for the best youth/school record book.

The contest begins at 11 a.m.

Banned Books Week contest at Hilo library

The Hilo Public Library invites teens ages 12-19 to help observe Banned Books Week (Sept. 22-28) by entering a contest to win a framed 1,000-piece book-themed jigsaw puzzle.

Teens who want to participate can sign up at the library’s young adult reference desk.

Registration is open now through Sept. 28.

Sign-waving event planned to kick off Climate Strike Week

The public is invited to participate in a sign-waving event from 3-6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at the Kamehameha statue in downtown Hilo to kick-off activities in observance of Climate Strike Week (Sept. 20-27).

This sign-waving hui kicks off a week-long series of events with Honokaa community members, Puuhuluhulu University, the University of Hawaii at Hilo climate action groups and more to raise awareness about climate change.

Don’t miss this heartfelt week of solidarity for the Earth and the future.
