Hawaii police have identified a man who drowned in the waters off of Kamilo Point in Ka‘u on Aug. 30.

The victim is identified as Eddie Fernandez, a 50-year-old Keaau resident.

Witnesses reported a swimmer in distress at about 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, but responders were unable to reach the remote shoreline for nearly two hours.

Seven units from the Hawaii County Fire Department and a Coast Guard airplane, helicopter and cutter searched for the swimmer and eventually located his body in the early hours of Aug. 31.
