During the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 1, Hawaii Island Police arrested 20 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and two were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 13; South Hilo, five; and Hamakua and South Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 754 DUI arrests compared to 758 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.5 percent.
There have been 644 major accidents so far this year compared to 832 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22.6 percent.
To date, there have been 15 official traffic fatalities, compared to 21 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 21.1 percent for for official fatalities. There are also two road-related deaths police don’t count toward this year’s official traffic fatality total — one because it was found to be caused by a medical condition and the other because it occurred within the boundararies of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
